Dear Sirs,
I am the author of the German all dog breed guide which was
translated into many languages around the world. I am currently
working on the 5th totally revised edition and I would very
 much like
to include your lovely breed. For this I need a good photograph
of a standing dog viewed from the side as I have seen on your website.
Ideal would be the dog without people in the background and 300 dpi
in postcard size to make a good print.
I would be very happy to hear from you if you would kindly
submit a photograph and look forward to your kind reply,

Thank you very much in advance,
 Yours sincerely,

History of Thai Bangkaew Dog Breed

Research suggests that this breed originated in the village of Bangkaew, located near the Bang Rakam District in the central region of Thailand. It is said that the Thai Bangkaew dog was first bred at a monestary called Wat Bangkaew. According to popular legend, the third abbot of the Wat Bangkaew Temple named Luang Puh Maak Metharee was well-known for the mercy and care he showed to all living things, and a villager named Tah Nim gave him a large female dog native to the land. The dog had apparently mated with a jackal or dhole, and the litter that resulted had long black and dark brown hair. It is said that Metharee raised the four female puppies. Later, it is believed that the abbot's dogs were mated with herding dogs that were kept by the Song people who lived in the nearby village of Huay Chan.

Sources say that in 1957, selective breeding took place, and these are the ancestors of the dog known as the Thai Bangkaew of today.

The Thai Bangkaew Dog is compactly built and square in profile. It is well proportioned, with a smooth gait. The double coat consists of a short undercoat, with longer guard hairs growing through it forming the outer coat. The coat is thicker and longer around the neck, chest, and back forming a lion-like ruff, which is more noticeable on dogs than on bitches. The plumed tail is carried with moderate upward curve over the back. The TBD comes in white with shades of red, gray, brown, and black in a wide variety of patterns.

Agile and active, they are strong swimmers and voracious diggers. They are highly intelligent but can be stubborn and benefit from training. Positive reinforcement methods work best with this breed. It has been said that these dogs are mixed from a wolf, a fox and a normal house dog or a lab.

[edit] History

Bangkaew is a village located in the Bang Rakam District, Phitsanulok Province in the central region of Thailand. In this district, near the Yom River, there is a monastery called Wat Bangkaew where it is believed that Thai Bangkaew Dogs originated.

Legend has it that the third abbot of Wat Bangkaew Temple, the respected Luang Puh Maak Metharee, was known for mercy and care given to all living things. An old Bangkaew villager named Tah Nim gave the abbot a native bitch. Because she was pregnant, her mating was though to be a jackal; the resulting litter produced longhaired puppies of black and dark brown coloration. Luang Puh Maak Metharee raised the resulting puppies, four females.

Since the hybrid between dog and jackal has been reported to be sterile[verification needed], it is more likely that the abbot's dogs mated with a long coat herding dog belonging to the Mong hilltribe from the neighbouring village of Huay Chan. The Mong's dog is the only local breed that carries a hair fur. Local residents of the houseboats along the Yom River took these dogs as their pets.

Seasonal rain produced flooding, a natural barrier that excluded other dogs from contributing to the gene pool. The inbreedings that took place led to the creation of the purebred Thai Bangkaew Dogs. From then on the breed has been selectively bred and has become one of the most favored varieties of Thai dogs.

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: The Thai Bangkaew Dog is an very old breed that originated from the Bangkaew village, Thanang-ngam area, Bang-rakam district, and Phitsanulok province in Thailand. The breed traces its ancestry back over 100 years from crossing a black Thai dog and white female Thai dog and a now extinct wild dog or wolf-type dog producing today's Bangkaew breed. In 1957, selective breeding from single litters has produced the look we have today. The Thai Bangkaew Dogs are regarded as a precious heritage of Phitsanulok province. The dogs are bred widely in the province and has become so famous nationwide that they are bred in every part of Thailand today. See less less

Thai Bangkaew Dog

From the Thailand Monasteries

The Thai Bangkaew Dog is a breed of dog from Thailand.  A fairly recent breed, the origins of the dog dates back only 100 years.  Still unrecognized by any major kennel club, the Thai Bangkaew Dog is slowly growing popularity.

Thai Bangkaew Dogs are medium sized and belong to the spitz family of dogs.  They stand between 17-21 inches and weigh between 35-46 pounds.  Like most spitz they have erect, triangular ears and have a curled tail that is carried along the back.  They have a double coat with longer hairs that form a ruff around their neck, which is more noticeable on males then females.  The Thai Bangkaew Dog is white with shades of red, gray, brown, or black in a variety of patterns.

The origin of the Thai Bangkaew Dog is a village in the Phitsanulok Province called Bangkaew.  Near the village there is a monastery called Wat Bangkaew.  The legend says the abbot was given a native dog with long fur that was already pregnant with pups.  Some believe that the father of these dogs may have been either jackal or dhole, and the result was four females pups with long hair and black or brown in color.  These dogs mated with herding dogs in a neighboring village.  Seasonal raining created a natural barrier that excluded other dogs from adding to the gene pool.  Eventually these dogs were selectively bred to create the Thai Bangkaew Dog.

Thai Bangkaew Dogs are natural watchdogs.  They are protective of their home and family, while aloof toward strangers.  This breed is highly active and prone to digging.  Although devoted to their masters and intelligent they can be difficult to train as they are a stubborn breed.  These dogs love to dig, and this is not something that they can be trained not to do.  Early socialization of the Thai Bangkaew Dog is recommended for other dogs and humans, they tend to be aggressive towards dogs of the same sex.

  Thai Bangkaew Dog
Second day of Bubbles with me.Short History of the Breed:
This breed of dog is indigenous to Thailand and has been here for many years. Its roots trace back to a temple.

Physical Description & Size:
The female of this breed does not grow as large as the male of the breed. The colors of the coat can vary, with white being the predominant color. Color on the coat can also change throughout the lifespan of the Bangkaew. Common colors other than white are black and brown. A female of one year is typically around 12 kg in weight.

Temperament:
The temperament of the Bangkaew is mostly of curiosity and energy, especially in the first year and a half. The dog likes to play with things and can go on a destructive bout if one is not careful, destroying yard ornaments and digging things up. However, it also likes to play, but in so doing often likes to make its own rules for play. When these rules are not abided by, the Bangkaew can humorously begin to get agitated and start to try to nip its master. One must be careful and train the dog that this is not good, especially when the Bangkaew begins to nip at the heels and ankles of a person, or rips its master's clothes for example.

Needs (exercise, grooming, living conditions, diet):
The Bangkaew must be frequently walked (or ran for that matter). It actively engages in play for exercise. Unless trained, the master will have a hard time bringing the Bangkaew back to the yard if he/she escapes out from behind the fence or gate. Grooming is also necessary. On occasion, the coat should be brushed for excessive hair. Also, weekly to bi-weekly baths are needed. However, the dog does not generally tend to accumulate an offensive odor when not bathed on occasion. The living conditions of the dog must be suitable so that he/she has room to play and "stretch" out the limbs and muscles. The bangkaew loves the outdoors and chasing small mammals around, as well as insects. It can also be kept indoors as a companion. The diet of the Bangkaew is such that it can survive on rice, meats like chicken and beef, but also the common canned wet and bagged dry dog food can be bought for the dog. Generally, it is not fond of dry dog food, but needs to have a bit of milk, artificial flavor enhancer sauce, or canned wet food mixed with its dry dog food.

Health Issues, Life Expectancy:
For continued longevity and healthfulness of the Bangkaew, it should be taken in for necessary vaccinations on time, at the discretion of the professional veterinarian. Vaccinations include those against rabies, worms and others. There is not sufficient experience with this dog to know its life expectancy, though a guess would probably be around ten to fifteen years, like other breeds of dogs.

Phitsanulok Province residents treasure Thai Bangkaew Dogs. An offspring of a local dog and a wolf mating, these attractive spitz-like dogs are enchanting, clever, and loyal as companions, fierce protectors, and guardians. Their double medium length coat comes parti-colored or white with patches of red, tan, gray, or black with a soft dense undercoat and a straight course outer coat. They are primarily kept for hunting snakes & watching the homestead. They can often be found perched on high objects such as a dog house or, picnic table etc... in order to keep an eye on things. Certainly, we will be glad to refer you to reputable breeders, knowledgeable shipping agents & reliable translators in Thailand.? We are more than happy to let you learn from our mistakes instead of repeating them. Often, sites that prominently display the acceptance of credit cards are not doing so as a convenience for buyer, Its usually a sign of a seller with more interest in getting your money, than providing a quality dog to qualified owners.
